Kolkata has become the latest stage for Starbucks’ premium push in India, as Tata Starbucks opened the country’s first rooftop Starbucks Reserve and the first Reserve store in eastern India at Quest Mall on 9 May 2026, a move its chief operating officer links to rising coffee consumption in a traditionally tea-dominated market, according to The Economic Times.
The new Starbucks Reserve outlet in Kolkata is the fourth such store in India and spans 3,600 square feet, nearly three times the chain’s average store size in the country, The Economic Times reported. According to lifestyle platform t2online, the space includes 65 indoor and 29 outdoor seats and keeps extended hours from 8 a.m. to midnight, creating what Tata Starbucks describes as a more immersive, high-engagement coffee bar.
Reserve coffees at the new store are priced 10–25% higher than regular Starbucks offerings, positioning the Kolkata outlet as a premium tier within the company’s Indian portfolio, according to The Economic Times. Chief operating officer Adrit Mishra told the publication that India now has 506 Starbucks stores across 81 cities, with 42 new openings in the current financial year so far and three straight quarters of positive same-store sales growth. Mishra said, “We are very bullish. For us, India has been a great story so far. It is reflective in over 500 stores, market share and us investing in these kind of formats,” in comments carried by Rediff.
Explaining the role of the Reserve concept, Mishra described it as “a very elevated, very differentiated form of coffee experience where consumers come, consume different coffees, sit there and want to see the brewing equipment,” according to Rediff. Launch coverage from Financial Samachar noted that the Kolkata Reserve menu highlights brewing methods such as siphon, pour-over and Chemex and features signature beverages including Shakerato Bianco over Ice and Vanilla Bean Latte, alongside a food menu that includes Kolkata Chicken Chaap Pizza, regional-style pastries and breads.
In his formal launch statement, Mishra said the opening “marks a special moment for us as we continue to evolve our coffeehouse experience in India,” adding that Starbucks Reserve “reflects our deep-rooted coffee heritage and craft” and that the Quest Mall store’s design language is inspired by Kolkata’s “rich cultural identity,” as quoted by Financial Samachar and t2online. Financial Samachar reported that the interiors use warm wood tones, bronze accents and geometric patterns referencing Bengali art.
The Reserve launch comes as Tata Starbucks highlights both the low base and growth potential of coffee consumption in India. “In India, coffee penetration is around 20–25 per cent, while tea penetration is 96 per cent. Five years back, coffee penetration was around 15 per cent. So, it is growing,” Mishra told The Economic Times. The same report described India as one of Starbucks’ fastest-growing global markets despite broader macroeconomic headwinds.
Kolkata itself is a symbolic location for this higher-end strategy. Mishra told The Times of India that the city is known for its historic Coffee House dating back to the British era and said that while coffee accounts for about 25% of hot beverage consumption, “the number of coffee connoisseurs is growing here.” In comments to t2online, Quest Mall director Shivika Goenka said, “Eastern India deserves the same calibre of premium experiences as any other metro,” and described the “real challenge” as shifting the narrative around Kolkata to convince brands to invest in such formats.
The Kolkata Reserve is part of a gradual rollout of this format across India. The Economic Times reported that the first Tata Starbucks Reserve store opened in Mumbai three years ago, followed by locations in Gurugram and Delhi, before this latest addition in eastern India. According to The Times of India, Tata Starbucks now operates 13 stores in Kolkata including the Reserve bar and is exploring potential outlets at the city’s airport and along nearby highways.
