A major Japanese café chain is using Bangkok as its next launchpad into Southeast Asia, with Komeda’s Coffee preparing to open its first directly managed store in Thailand at Exchange Tower during 2026, as part of a wider ASEAN-focused expansion strategy.
According to QSR Media Asia, the outlet will operate under local subsidiary KOMEDA COFFEE (Thailand) Co., Ltd. at Exchange Tower in Bangkok’s Asoke district, with opening scheduled within 2026. X-bomber Thailand reported that the planned store name is provisionally “Komeda Coffee Asoke Exchange Tower” and that the site sits in a busy business area served by the BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit stations, drawing office workers, nearby residents and domestic and international visitors.
The Thailand move builds on a growing international footprint. QSR Media Asia and X-bomber Thailand both state that Komeda operates 81 overseas stores as of the end of July 2026, in markets including Taiwan, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore. Lifestyle blog Bangkok Jijii (ameblo.jp/bangkokjijii) adds that the group has 1,160 stores in total worldwide, of which 1,079 are in Japan and 81 overseas, though it notes these domestic and total figures as unconfirmed.
The company’s Thailand entry is explicitly framed as part of a broader ASEAN push. QSR Media Asia reports that this opening aligns with Komeda’s “Connect 2030” plan, which aims to accelerate overseas expansion mainly in ASEAN and reach 180 overseas stores by the end of February 2031. X-bomber Thailand likewise links the Bangkok store to regional growth targets, citing Komeda Holdings’ plan for 180 international locations within that timeframe, while noting that the new Thai subsidiary was established on 8 June 2026 with capital of 6 million Thai baht for restaurant and related businesses.
Local context appears central to the choice of Thailand and the specific Bangkok site. X-bomber Thailand describes Thailand as one of Southeast Asia’s largest economies, with an expanding food-service market and a growing middle-income class, and characterizes the country as a pro-Japan market where interest in Japanese food and café culture is high. The same source portrays Bangkok as a representative international city in ASEAN that attracts both business travelers and tourists, providing a customer base that aligns with Komeda’s regional growth ambitions.
Menu plans for the Exchange Tower store aim to balance brand standards with local adaptation. X-bomber Thailand and Bangkok Jijii report that the lineup will feature Komeda Blend coffee, the chain’s signature morning service offering toast or a boiled egg at no extra charge with a drink order, and its Shiro-Noir dessert, alongside original items tailored to Thai tastes and food culture. QSR Media Asia notes that Komeda’s Thailand outlet will be directly managed rather than franchised through local partners, via its Bangkok-based subsidiary.
Komeda Holdings, headquartered in Nagoya in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture, has not published additional financial details around the Thailand project in the sources reviewed. However, Nikkei Asia, QSR Media Asia and X-bomber Thailand all report that the company is targeting the opening of its first Thai store during 2026 and 180 overseas outlets by the fiscal year ending February 2031 as milestones within its Connect 2030 overseas expansion plan.
