Nespresso Breaks Ground: First Rainforest Alliance Regenerative Coffee Claim

Is your coffee really regenerative? Nespresso’s bold new Rainforest Alliance claim could reshape the industry—find out what’s brewing.

Nespresso is set to become the initial coffee brand to sell coffee with the Rainforest Alliance Regenerative certification starting in 2026. This certification will mark a new chapter for sustainable farming in the coffee industry. Nespresso has been working closely with the Rainforest Alliance for over two decades. Their partnership has focused on promoting sustainable agricultural practices that help farmers improve coffee quality and protect the environment.

The Rainforest Alliance introduced its regenerative standard in September 2025. This new standard aims to promote healthier soil, biodiversity, and climate resilience through verified outcomes. It includes 17 regenerative practices that go beyond previous sustainable farming methods, providing a solid framework for farmers to follow.

The initial coffee lots certified under this program will come from a farm owned by Yamileth Chacón in Costa Rica. There are more plans for certified coffee from other farms in Costa Rica and Mexico.

Nespresso aims to make this certification a key part of its strategy to shift coffee growing on a larger scale to regenerative practices. Over 40% of the coffee Nespresso sources globally already comes from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. This number is expected to grow as Nespresso works with farmers to achieve and maintain certification. By displaying the Rainforest Alliance seal on its packaging, Nespresso highlights its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Nespresso is committed to scaling regenerative practices, with over 40% of its coffee sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

The AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program has already helped over 56,000 farmers improve their coffee yields while adopting more sustainable practices. Farmers involved in this program have reported better pest management and increased recycling rates compared to non-AAA farmers.

Nespresso’s plans for the future include increasing the amount of coffee sourced at the bronze regenerative tier to 95% by 2030.

Nespresso’s leadership in obtaining this regenerative certification sets an example for the coffee industry. It shows a commitment to making coffee production more sustainable for future generations.
